OAK LAWN PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD POLICY
UNATTENDED CHILDREN
The staff of the Oak Lawn Public Library is concerned for the safety and well-being of all children. Children 10 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult caregiver at all times. Caregivers are responsible for their young ones. Caregivers who bring children 10 years old and younger to Library programs must remain in the building and may be required to accompany their child to a program.
Children 11 years and older may use the Library unattended by a caregiver. However, the Library recommends that adult caregivers accompany all visiting children at all times in this public building. Children unaccompanied by an adult for an extended period of time may be approached by staff for information concerning their caregivers’ whereabouts. If a staff member is concerned for a child’s safety and an adult caregiver cannot be located, Library employees are authorized to call the police.
Children estimated to be 15 years and younger left unattended at closing time will be engaged by staff for their well-being. If a caregiver does not arrive within 15 minutes after closing, a staff member will call the police to ensure the safety of the child.
