On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, the Oak Lawn Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the renovation of the Library lobby to create a proposed “Encore Room,” a 2,000 sq. ft. room designed to house Oak Lawn senior center programs and activities.

The Board had been in discussions in the previous months with Oak Lawn Village Mayor Terry Vorderer, who approached the Library with the proposal. Having made the decision to end funding for the Oak Lawn Senior Center at McGugan school, Vorderer was in search of alternative locations to continue senior programs and services. During several board meetings in early 2022, Oak Lawn seniors publicly expressed their thoughts and feelings about the proposal to the Mayor and the Library board. With the senior center contract set to terminate at the end of June, the Library board voted to approve it with the understanding that while providing a substitute senior center did not typically encompass the mission of a public library, creating such a center would provide Oak Lawn seniors something rather than being left with nothing.

The Library is currently in discussions and negotiations with the Village to establish a working contract, an architect, and a timeline for construction. Tentatively, work is set to begin in the Spring of 2023 if all legal and contractual agreements can be reached.
