Title: Whoosh! Lonnie Johnson’s Super Soaking Stream of Inventions
Author: Chris Barton
Lexile Level: 820L
Pages: 32
In Whoosh! Lonnie Johnson’s Super Soaking Stream of Inventions author Chris Barton presents an inspiring story about not giving up in the face of difficult odds. Barton chronicles Lonnie Johnson’s life as an inventor, beginning in childhood, where his passion for engineering fueled his drive and curiosity. In school, Johnson impressed peers and adults by creating toy rockets, even learning how to make fuel, and building his own robot. Lonnie went on to work for NASA, helping send the Galileo space probe to Jupiter. Then, while researching new cooling systems for refrigerators and air conditioners, Lonnie stumbled upon a simple technology that would become the basis for one of the world’s most popular toys. Nevertheless, Lonnie faced seemingly endless challenges bringing his new toy to market. If not for Johnson’s perseverance the Super Soaker would have remained a forgotten prototype.
