Title: A Tangle of Knots
Author: Lisa Graff
Recommendations & Comments: In a world very much like our own, people have capital-T Talents -- low-level but real powers, which can range from being a super-fast, skilled knitter to floating a few inches off the ground. Eleven year-old orphan Cady can bake the perfect cake for anyone. While winning baking contests is great, she'd much rather get paired with a family that loves her.
While the story is called A Tangle of Knots, each chapter is presented as a piece of a puzzle. We jump from one character to another, each telling a piece of the story from their point of view before moving on to someone else, and so on before rejoining others. We meet a girl who may not have a Talent, her brothers -- whose Talents include spitting and getting lost, a mysterious hot air balloon pilot, and a shopkeeper who has found a way to steal other people's Talents. All of their separate stories interact and inform each other, coming together in an ending that leaves them all changed for the better.
As a bonus, the book mixes in several of Cady's simple but delicious-sounding cake recipes, so this is a story you can taste as well, if you're up for it.
