Title: Paper Things
Author: Jennifer Jacobson
Lexile Level: 830L
Jennifer Richard Jacobson’s Paper Things is the story of two parentless siblings, 12 year old Ari and her brother Gage, who are in the custody of Janna, an old family friend with her own mysterious history. At 19, Gage, who does not get along with Jana, moves out. Ari decides to go with her brother, who tells Janna that he has secured an apartment. In fact, there is no apartment – plans have fallen through. As Gage and Ari bounce from couch to couch and shelter to shelter, Ari struggle to maintain her grades and school friendships. Ari’s misfortune depicts the struggles, fears, and disparities that all homeless people undoubtedly face, providing a window into a side of life many readers may not know or understand. At the very least, this poignant story should generate sympathy and compassion for a neglected segment of our population.
