Title: Diamond Willow
By: Helen Frost
Pages: 128
Lexile Level: 670L
In a small town in Alaska lives a 12 year-old girl named Diamond Willow. She and her family practice the tradition of using sled dogs and have five faithful dogs they treasure as champions, especially the lead dog named Roxy. However, when Diamond decides to use the sled dogs independently to go to her grandparents’ house, things take an unexpected turn that will change their lives forever. Now that Roxy is plunged into darkness after the accident, Diamond feels torn from everyone in her family, and feels like she can never forgive herself. Slowly, Diamond regains her family ties when she begins to learn about their family secret. This coming-of-age, free-verse tale of love, trust, hope, and forgiveness is spiritually uplifting and connecting.
