Fifty years later, the presence of the 1967 Tornado continues to be felt by many in Oak Lawn. Preparing this year’s commemoration offered an opportunity for me to become familiar with not only the devastation but how residents came together to face adversity. No matter where and when tornados strike, they leave a similar impact on witnesses and survivors. In What Stands in a Storm , author Kim Cross vividly describes an enormous superstorm that unleashed hundreds of tornados across the country in April 2011, impacting 21 states. Cross focuses on the immense destruction and the everyday heroes who emerged to help.
